Girls’ volleyball ended a monumental season with a heartbreaking loss in the CMass finals against Acton-Boxborough on November 12 after thirty-seven years of not qualifying for the district finals.

Although the Mid Wach A league champs suffered a tough defeat after building an 18-2 record, they managed to keep the momentum going throughout all three sets during the final match.

“All of the sets were so close, it was back and forth, back and forth, and I think they all played hard,” assistant varsity and freshman coach Lindsay Coppens said. “I think they just barely inched us out.”

Going into the finals, senior captain Jordan Yung felt the pressure to win, but was reliant on the team’s previous successful efforts to help pull them through.

“We knew that if we stuck to what we had done all season, working as a team and relying on each other for support, we’d be okay and we’d be able to at least give Acton-Boxborough a good run for their money,” Yung said.

The fan support throughout the season motivated the team during games, especially in the CMass finals, with packed stands and many students holding up signs to cheer their team on.

“[The finals] was very hyped,” junior spectator Rosa Daeipour said. “Everyone had a lot of confidence in the team, and even when they were losing a bit, people were still keeping the energy.”

“I think overall fans make a huge difference in volleyball matches because the players feed off the energy of the fans,” Coppens said.

Despite their loss in the finals, the team holds a lot of pride in their rewarding season.

“It was a definitely a sad moment, but at the same time, I was definitely proud of our team and how we didn’t give up, even in the end,” senior captain Kristen Cooley said. “I think it was a really good way to go out.”

“The season really couldn’t have gone any better way: we finished League Champs, we beat Westborough for the first time in basically four years or so,” Yung said. “I hope next year they can build on that and keep building on that until eventually maybe we do win states. This year was definitely a really big stepping stone for the future.”
