  • Oscar Pistorius– South African sprint-runner, Oscar Pistorius, has been sentenced to five years in prison. According to the New York Times, Pistorius was sentenced for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. He is only called to serve one-sixth of the prison term, and after 10 months can be placed under house-arrest. He was also give a suspended three-year term for firearm charges.

  • Indiana- 19-year-old Afrikka Hardy was found in a motel room left dead. Hardy had arrived at the Motel 6 in Gary, Indiana last week after an appointment was set up through a classified site used to advertise prostitutes. Hardy was to meet a 43-year-old man there, but was found strangled later that same day.  According to the New York Times, the police reported that Afrikka had been killed by convicted sex offender Darren Vann. When taken into custody, Vann confessed to killing at least seven other women.
  • iPhone– The iPhone 6, released in September, has driven Apple’s sales profits up greatly. According to the New York Times, Apple has sold 39-million iPhones. 33.8-million iPhones were sold when the tech-company had  released previous models last year. The increase in numbers is very significant; Apple has made $8.5-billion in net profits which is a 13.3 percent higher than just a year ago.
  • Oscar de la Renta- American fashion designer, Oscar de la Renta, passed away at the age of 82 on October 20, 2014. ABC News reports that he had been struggling with cancer since 2006 and died from the complications. He died at his home in Connecticut, just weeks after his runway show in September. De la Renta has been known for dressing society in high-couture, from Jackie Kennedy to Michelle Obama, and more recently, George Clooney’s wife Amal Alamuddin.
