Located in downtown Southborough, Southborough House of Pizza stands out from the many other Greek restaurants in the area with its expansive menu and nostalgic ambiance.
Angelo and Joanna Baltas founded Southborough House of Pizza in 1974. In 1985, it was moved to its current location, Southborough’s Old Fire Station on 5 Main Street. The outside of the restaurant is beautifully restored, with a brick exterior and large glass windows. On the walls inside are pictures of the firehouse when it was still operational and memorable items, such as fire axes, are hung on display. The presentation of the town’s history is both charming and interesting to anyone curious about Southborough’s past. Although Southborough House of Pizza may look small from the outside, the inside is roomy with many seating options.
Customers don’t have to order a pizza to walk away from the restaurant with a full stomach. In addition to having many pizza options, Southborough House of Pizza has an incredibly expansive menu that boasts a wide selection of calzones, deli sandwiches with multiple bread options available, salads, pasta dishes, numerous appetizers, full-on entrees and even a children’s menu. There is also a fridge filled with Ben & Jerry’s ice cream as well as cookies and Whoopie Pies available for purchase.
I ordered a slice of pepperoni pizza and an eggplant parmesan sub at the counter, as pizzas and subs seem to be Southborough House of Pizza’s specialty. The wait for the food ended up being around 15 minutes, which in my opinion seemed reasonable. The pizza slice cost $3.25 while a small sub was $10.95, not exactly a bargain, but a sensibly priced meal nonetheless.
The pepperoni pizza could best be described as an average slice of Greek pizza with no unique attributes. I ordered a singular slice, which was indeed “a BIG slice,” just as it was described on their online menu. The pizza was quite greasy, but not enough so that I felt I needed to dab the oil off with a paper towel. There was noticeably a lot of cheese on the pizza, but it wasn’t overwhelming.
The real star of the show, however, was the eggplant parmesan sub. It was cheesy with just enough sauce, and the eggplant was well-cooked without being too bitter. Occasionally, eggplant parmesan subs will have too much eggplant on them, but that wasn’t the case for this one. To top it all off, the bread roll was nicely toasted, bringing the whole sub together.
Southborough House of Pizza is a great place to grab lunch, whether you’re in the mood for pizza, a sub or are just looking for a place to hang out with friends. Whatever the reason may be, it is worth the time to stop by.
