Getting up in the morning is a struggle most students can relate to, and the same repetitive alarm sound every day does not make it any easier. Fortunately, there’s a solution: the Hatch alarm clock.
The Hatch offers a wide selection of alarm sounds and features a natural sunrise simulation that gradually brightens in the morning, making waking up a more pleasant experience. The clock also includes an extensive collection of soothing soundscapes designed to promote relaxation and help users fall asleep with ease.
The latest model, the Restore 3, is available on the Hatch website for $169.99. While this may seem expensive for an alarm clock, the device offers much more than a traditional timepiece.
What sets the Hatch alarm clock apart is the integration of an app, called Hatch Sleep, which allows users to create a personalized sleep routine tailored to their personal sleep schedule and preferences. For example, a routine may consist of meditation at 10 p.m., relaxing music for an hour and then a 6 a.m. alarm on weekdays and an 8 a.m. alarm on weekends.
The app also offers a yearly subscription for $49.99. This upgrade unlocks features like a “bedtime cue” sound and access to a variety of podcasts, meditations, bedtime stories and motivational content to help you start your day on a positive note.
While the subscription adds plenty of valuable features, it might not feel worth the splurge to everyone. Free alternatives like YouTube or Spotify offer similar content, without the added expense. For instance, YouTube channels like “Relaxing White Noise” or Spotify Playlists like “Morning Acoustic” can help you unwind or wake up gently.
That said, even without the subscription, I have found the alarm clock to be a wonderful addition to my daily routine. I would always struggle with waking up to alarms, but since using my Restore, I have yet to sleep through a single one.
Since using the clock, I’ve noticed a significant boost in my mood. Starting my day with a soothing sunrise and the sounds of birds chirping has made me feel more productive and excited to begin each morning.
My quality of sleep has also significantly improved. Now that I don’t use my phone as an alarm, I have been able to charge it away from my bed, making it less tempting as a late-night distraction.
The Restore 3 was released in Jan. 2025. I received my Hatch as a Christmas gift, so I own the Restore 2, which was the same price as the new model. While the two are quite similar, the Restore 3 includes more sound options and additional device controls. For example, the Restore 3 has a button that can snooze your alarm or turn it off completely, so users can enjoy less reliance on the app itself. There are also additional ambient noises, nature sounds and other “Dreamy Destinations,” which consist of ocean waves or forest breezes.
One underrated feature of the clock is its sleek, modern appearance. It sits perfectly on my nightstand and blends seamlessly with my bedroom decor, making it both functional and an aesthetically pleasing addition to my space.
However, the clock does have its drawbacks. It is not portable, as it is specifically designed for bedside use, making it less convenient for frequent travelers. The initial physical setup and syncing it with the app was also complex, so it is not ideal for those who are not tech-savvy.
Overall, even considering the price, potential subscription costs and lack of portability, the Hatch Restore is a game-changer for anyone looking to enhance their sleep and wake-up routine. Waking up to a gentle, calming alarm while feeling well-rested is sure to bring a smile to everyone’s face, ready to take on any challenges the day ahead may hold.
