Zhang strives to hear every voice as Junior Class President
November 18, 2021
Junior Class President Cyan Zhang leads the Steering Committee, hoping to make school fun for all students and to bring Algonquin back to its pre-pandemic state.
For his first year as class president, Zhang has big plans.
“School spirit, in recent years, has not been the best at Algonquin, so that is one of my main goals,” Zhang said.
To do so, he hopes to design t-shirts to show off class spirit.
With help from other class officers including Vice President Abby Martinek, Secretary Katie Brown, Treasurer Mia Lockhead, Zhang has already made progress on returning back to normal.
On Oct. 15, the Steering Committee, led by Zhang, hosted Algonquin’s first Homecoming dance since 2019. The group was tasked with planning a large social event in the safest way possible for students.
“There were a lot of restrictions, and it was unfortunate we had to have it on the tennis courts, but we just had to do what we could to give everyone the best experience,” Zhang said.
The dance brought in 340 students and $1,700 dollars for the junior class.
With his classmates in mind, Zhang strives to make sure everyone feels like their opinions are heard in what happens during their time at ARHS
“It’s a big responsibility,” Zhang said. “I have to make sure every voice is heard, but at the end of the day it’s very rewarding knowing that I can help out my class as a whole.’’
Junior Steering Committee members meet in Adviser Kerrian Lessard’s room (G112) every other Tuesday. In Steering meetings, members plan fundraising and coordinate all of the activities for the Junior Class including Homecoming and Prom this year!
With a lot to do in preparation, Zhang is planning to run again next year, but wants to take it one year at a time to continue to give it his best.
