Varsity baseball: playoffs recap

The varsity baseball team was ready to slam through the playoffs, which began on Friday, May 30, but after a hard fight they went down to Doherty, 0-1, cutting them out of playoffs.

“Playoffs are a whole different ballgame,” senior pitcher Patrick Kane said. “I remember two years ago when we got in, we were the last seed and we just ran the table and had a lot of fun doing that. [‘The last seed’ means] we were the last team to make it… and then we just kept winning ballgames and we got to the State finals.”

“Oh yeah, squad is ready to go,” senior shortstop Jack Henningson said, prior to their loss. “We’ve been working hard in practice, working on our pitching, defence and timely hitting, and I think we’re ready to put all three of those together for the game tomorrow. We’re pumped!”

Teams have to make it past seven playoff games in order to make it into the finals, but they take up the challenge with enthusiasm and confidence.

The team, comprised of twelve seniors, five juniors and three sophomores, completed their final regular season game last Monday and were eager to win as many ballgames as they can.

“We lost in the second round of playoffs last year, and that was kind of a bitter taste,” Henningson said.

However, the team played without one of their senior players in the playoffs; Solomon injured his hand during the season and needs more time to heal before he can get back on the field.

“There’s not a whole lot I can do without playing so I’m trying to stay involved with it, trying to do a little something with the team, but I’m just kind of hanging out right now,” Solomon said.
