The boys’ varsity baseball team is 4-4 (as of May 3) with a high prospective for success.

“Our season has started a bit slow…but the kids are working hard,” coach Mike Mocerino said. “The current record is not indicative of who we are as a team.”

The team has big ambitions for the season.

“Making Super Eight [top eight teams in MA], that’s our ultimate goal,” senior pitcher Connor Henderson said.

According to assistant coach Brian Doherty, ten wins are needed to qualify for the tournament and the boys share a desire to achieve this milestone.

“Everyone has a common goal and it really shows during practice, because the guys are committed to winning,” senior Nolan Kessinger, who will be playing at UMass Amherst next year, said.

Before 2014 when he took over as head coach, Mocerino assisted Hall of Fame coach Neil Burke. During this time, the team won the 2006 State Championship. Mocerino has made it his goal to continue Burke’s winning tradition by focusing on clinching wins in upcoming games.

“The outlook for the season is to take one game at a time and only worry about the things we have control over, not the things we don’t,” Mocerino said.

Players enjoy being part of the team.

“Having a group of guys that you go to school with and see everyday for practice is an amazing thing and that’s the best part about playing at Algonquin,” Kessinger said.

The strong bond and positive attitude of the team is one of the many factors that contributes to the optimistic outlook for the season.

“[The potential is] very very high,” said Henderson. “We have a lot of talent, a lot of good players. If we could score runs, the sky’s the limit.”

Specifically, according to Henderson, Wachusett and Westborough are games to see.

“How we prepare and the focus we have will bring us together as a team and if we can accomplish a team mentality and outwork our opponent, then this team will accomplish special things this year,” Mocerino said.
