Long, Welty break all time field hockey records

Senior Taylor Long broke the all-time leading score record on September 25, previously held by Elizabeth Holmes in 2011. Varsity field hockey is notorious for their impressive talent and outstanding coaching, but this season the team has exceeded everyone’s expectations.
Long is currently the only senior on the team who has been playing at the varsity level for all four years, and her hard work has clearly paid off.
“I’ve been working towards breaking that record since freshman year so it was amazing to see all my hard work put to use and being able to reach my goal,” Long said. Next year, Long will play Division II field hockey at Stonehill College in Easton, MA.
Additionally, varsity coach Dan Welty won his 100th game as a varsity coach, pulling a 6-2 victory over Leominster on October 7. After eight and a half years of coaching varsity, there is no doubt that Welty’s coaching skills have lead the team to success.
What makes the program so strong has a lot to do with Welty’s efforts in the off season.
“I think I am a coach who really wants to be in as much of it as I can. Between the offseason, clinics, camps, club stuff, that to me is really important for the program.” Welty said. “Field hockey I think is a sport where there are a lot of camps out there for people to go to, but when it comes to the best quality ones they are sometimes hard to find. So that was always sort of my goal from the beginning to get the best training we can off season.”
