New Applied Arts and Technology teacher Chandler Behringer is bringing his passion for technology and engineering to teach students computer science.
Behringer majored in Science and Technology Education for grades five through twelve at Fitchburg State University with minors in Electronics and Industrial Training. Internships that he completed during that time further fueled his passion for teaching computer science. He comes to Algonquin with two years of experience as a substitute teacher at North Middlesex Regional School District.
“When I was in high school, I always found the engineering classes to be really engaging and fun,” Behringer said. “I also really enjoyed helping my peers.”
Now, Behringer uses that passion to teach AP Computer Science Principles, AP Computer Science A, Python and C++. He enjoys teaching the basics to students and seeing their confidence grow.
“I think it’s awesome being able to help students get from point A to point B,” Behringer said. “When they’re starting, they might not know much or be struggling with the subject, but they build up that confidence over time. I help them through lessons to the point where they can start doing it themselves and not necessarily need as many scaffolds or instructions.”
Applied Arts and Technology department head George Clarke acknowledges Behringer’s teaching capabilities.
“He is really good at making connections with his students,” Clarke said. “He is just a great teacher and good at explaining things.”
Ultimately, Clarke believes that Behringer makes a suitable addition to the school.
“I think he’s a good fit at Algonquin,” Clarke said. “He fits our culture.”
So far, Behringer is finding the school to be a great place to teach at due to the welcoming faculty and attentive students.
“All the kiddos are amazing here, and all the faculty are awesome and welcoming,” Behringer said. “I think the culture’s amazing. There’s a willingness for students to help other students in classes. Everyone’s been engaged, talking and really excited to learn. It’s an area that I’d like to be able to stay in for as long as possible.”
Outside of the classroom, Behringer also likes to stay active and be outdoors.
“I like to take my dog, Gus, on a lot of walks and go hiking,” Behringer said. “Anything outside is nice.”
As for the near future, Behringer is especially excited to experience the spirited school events that occur around Thanksgiving and winter break.
“I’m looking forward to anything that happens,” Behringer said. “A lot of the stuff is a surprise to me at some point, which is not necessarily bad, just exciting.”
