As the summer ends and fall begins, fall sports are getting back in the swing of things. One sport that most people are excited for is the return of football for both college and the National Football League (NFL). As school sports begin as well, there are many sports teams at Algonquin looking to have successful seasons.

College Buzz
Have nothing to do on Saturday, don’t worry, because college football is back. Five weeks into the season, the top five teams in the Associated Press (AP) top 25 rankings are Ohio State (4-0), Oregon (5-0), The University of Miami (4-0), The University of Mississippi (5-0) and The University of Oklahoma (5-0). Heisman candidates include quarterback John Matter from the University of Oklahoma, quarterback Carson Beck of the University of Miami and wide receiver Jeremiah Smith of Ohio State. The Florida State Seminoles remain one of the biggest surprises in college football, as they have climbed all the way to number eight on the AP power rankings after previously being unranked. The inconsistencies of Texas quarterback Arch Manning have also been surprising. Manning was a projected Heisman candidate going into his sophomore year. However, in his first matchup against Ohio State, he only had 170 passing yards with one pick and one touchdown pass.
Pro Buzz
The NFL has gotten off to a great start; however, for some teams, a painful one. Quarterback Joe Burrow suffered a turf toe injury in week two against the Jaguars that will require him to get surgery, sidelining him for about three months. Some other notable injuries include quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who missed week three with an ankle injury and is expected to be out for week five, and wide receiver Malik Nabers, who tore his ACL and is expected to miss the rest of the season. In Foxboro, Patriots second-year quarterback Drake Maye looks like he could be on his way to a breakout year, as he had a strong performance against the Dolphins week two and showed flashes against Carolina on Sunday. Some Women National Basketball Association (WNBA) news, the final round starts Oct. 3 with the Phoenix Mercury already securing a spot in the finals with a 3-1 series win against the Minnesota Lynx. The Las Vegas Aces and Indian Fever series being tied at 2-2 will go into game five on Sept. 30, both fighting to continue their seasons.
That wraps up many of the sports news going around so far in Sept. Some things to keep an eye on going forward are the start of the Major League baseball (MLB) playoffs and the start of both the National Hockey League (NHL) and National basketball association (NBA) seasons. See you next time!
