It’s a Thursday night. 10:30 pm, and it’s the night before the biggest exam yet of your high school career. You’re stressed, cramming and in an effort to memorize every polyatomic ion for Chemistry or every verb conjugation for Spanish, you turn to Quizlet.
You begin studying and, after going through all of your flashcards, Quizlet recommends you use the “learn” tool. You complete a few rounds and are starting to feel better about your exam when suddenly: “Upgrade to review the remaining 36 terms!” You sigh in defeat.
Although the interactive website Quizlet is a helpful alternative to hand made paper flashcards, it has its downsides. The commonly used Quizlet is progressively becoming less accessible to the general student population with the introduction of Quizlet Plus. Now, one can only access a limited amount of Quizlet’s tools without paying for the upgraded version. Many of the most helpful features, such as practice tests and the “learn” feature, on Quizlet are not free to use, as they require a Quizlet Plus subscription. Costing $35.99 a year or $7.99 a month, Quizlet has become a nuisance, adding another boundary to studying for success on exams.
But don’t lose all hope yet – there is an alternative! Knowt is free to use and has nearly identical features as Quizlet Plus, but at no cost to you. On Knowt, the Quizlet “learn” feature, which is so helpful, is readily available. And you may be wondering: what about all of my Quizlet sets? Thankfully, Knowt provides an option to import flashcard sets from Quizlet, so you can still utilize your already made Quizlet sets.
What stands out most about this application is that it is truly there to help you learn and succeed. Knowt provides AP practice tests, and various matching or memory games, all that make learning fun and memorization easy.
Like Quizlet, Knowt is not perfect. Knowt also offers a premium version for $14.99 a month or $49.99 for the entire year. This version allows unlimited access to full length AP practice tests, ad-free studying and multiple AI assistance tools. In addition, Knowt often drains my computer and has frequent ads, wasting much more energy than Quizlet does.
With that in mind, if you are looking to just study and memorize terms, Quizlet may be the way to go. On the other hand, for more comprehensive and helpful study guides, practice tests and activities, Knowt is the best option.
