Senior traditions have been a rewarding wrap up to high school as students juggle their future goals, whether that’s college, jobs, trade school or even the army. During this hectic time, childlike nostalgia is resurfaced in ways through certain traditions, like playing games with classmates you have grown up with.
#5: Senior’s ‘Lasts’
Whether that ‘last’ is the last sports game, school day, spirit week or powder puff, the events are established around seniors, allowing them to have a memorable wrap up. Sports host senior nights, school events hand over the mic to senior students and the eyes of underclassmen fixate on seniors.
#4: Senior Ball
Seniors are invited to spend time together at Mt. Wachusett dancing, dining and completing fun activities (including a ride up the chair lift). Summery long dresses and short khakis are worn to Senior Ball at Wachusett Mountain. One last dance, get together with your graduating class as well as an opportunity to converse with teacher chaperones.
#3: Red Sox Game
On April 7, the class of 2025 gathered at Fenway Park to enjoy fried dough, dip and dots, chicken tenders and other baseball concession staples. Rain or shine, seniors show up for the game in Boston. This memorable event is great for sports fans as well as those who simply like to dress up in jerseys and take pictures. The reserved student section allows the class to sit in the ballpark stands together without the worry for assigned seats, cherishing their last moments with their class.
#2: Graduation
Graduation, which will take place on Saturday, May 31 at 10 a.m. on the Richard Walsh Field (Athletic Complex stadium), has arguably been the key date seniors have been eyeing. Receiving a high school diploma amongst family and friends is a memorable accomplishment that officially launches off graduates into their next life steps. The ceremony spans a little over an hour and brings the graduating class together one last time. Senior issues, created by seniors on The Harbinger editorial board, will also be passed out at graduation, which includes students’ future plans and fun coverage.
#1: Senior Assassin
Senior assassin, or what some other schools refer to as senior splash, is a student organized event in which seniors pay a 20 dollar entry fee to compete for the grand prize, which is made up of hundreds of dollars. Seniors who participate may purchase a water gun, which they use to get their randomly assigned target out. As the game progresses, purges, holy water scavenger hunts and higher stakes are exhilarating. This game takes place over the span of roughly three weeks and typically brings together over 150 seniors to compete amongst each other. The competitive and playful nature of the game unites the class together for one last hurrah. My advice: trust nobody.
There are countless other senior traditions that are hard to forget like these honorable mentions: senior stroll, senior prank, universally ‘sick’ day (skip) and senior sunset. Whether senior year is a time that you hold closely and savor or if it is another year of work, the memories and traditions carried enhance the memories made. Student council, senior steering committee, class advisors and faculty members are a part of what makes this happen. So, as Ferris Bueller says — “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”
