As March comes to an end, the madness is just beginning. With the first two rounds of the men’s and women’s NCAA tournament coming to a close, let’s take a look at what happened. On the men’s side of the tournament, the highest seed to advance to the round of 32 was 12th-seeded McNeese State University as they defeated No. 5 seed Clemson University. 12th-seeded Colorado State University also moved on to the second round with a win over the No. 5 seed University of Memphis. However, the long-awaited twists and turns of March Madness have been hard to come by this year. There were no overtime games in the first weekend of the tournament, and only one buzzer beater by University of Maryland as they topped Colorado State University in the second round. The Sweet 16 only consisted of one double-digit seed in University of Arkansas. The women’s tournament has been much the same. The most exciting game earlier on was University of Alabama vs University of Maryland which saw University of Maryland coming out on top after three overtimes. The final four provided some more thrilling games, and the tournament wrapped up with No. 2 seed UConn defeating top-seeded South Carolina 82-59.

The Major League Baseball (MLB) season is back. Opening day on March 27 was earlier in the year than it normally is. Baseball means spring and warmer weather is coming. Our local team, the Boston Red Sox, ended last year with the most mediocre record in baseball at 81-81. This year, the team has added star third baseman Alex Bregman from the Houston Astros to beef up the lineup. With younger players like Kristian Campbell at second base making his major league debut and a brand new pitching staff, the Red Sox are geared up for a big year. According to MLB.com predictions on March 26, the Red Sox are projected to win the American League (AL) and make the world series this year. There are definitely some high expectations for this Red Sox team, who won their opening day game 5-2. Be sure to keep your eye on them this season. The New England Patriots have answered the fans request and splashed in free agency. They signed defensive tackle (DT) Milton Williams who was a Super Bowl champion this past season with the Philadelphia Eagles. Signing Williams will solidify the interior defensive line of the New England Patriots. He has become the highest paid athlete in New England Patriots history at 26 million dollars a year. The Patriots also signed wide receiver Stefon Diggs for 23 million dollars a year. Diggs is a high profile wide receiver and will be the number one target for sophomore quarterback Drake Maye. The Patriots have signed 17 players, notably including former Detroit Lions cornerback Carlton Davis and edge rusher Harold Landry, who formerly was a part of the Tennessee Titans.
