Donuts are a wonderful sweet treat to enjoy at any time of the day, whether for breakfast or an afternoon snack. Rocco’s Donuts brings a unique local twist, although it may not be better than a go-to Massachusetts staple, Dunkin’.
Rocco’s Donuts offers more than donuts; they offer breakfast sandwiches, bagels and cream cheese, and a large drink menu ranging from lattes to apple cider. In addition, they get creative with specialty monthly menus that capture the essence of each season, offering unique flavors and treats to match the vibe of the month.
During my most recent visit to Rocco’s Donuts in Westborough, I tried a s’mores, strawberry and coconut chocolate donut. I arrived around 11 a.m. and was happy to find no line, but unfortunately, the experience wasn’t as enjoyable as I had hoped. The workers weren’t the friendliest, and when I bit into my donuts, I was surprised to find they were a bit dry and lacked the expected fluffiness.
Going relatively early, I would expect to receive fresh donuts, but mine tasted like they had been sitting out for days. The donuts I get at Dunkin’ are consistently fluffy, no matter the time of day. I spent $12 on three donuts and at Dunkin’ it’s $5.10 for three donuts; it was disappointing to pay so much for donuts that didn’t meet my expectations.
Despite the unique flavors, the actual donuts at Rocco’s didn’t impress me much; they were no better than what you’d get at Dunkin’. In fact, Dunkin’ Donuts is more consistent, as you always know what you will get with them. While Rocco’s offers creative options, the quality just didn’t live up to expectations.
There are currently only three Rocco’s Donuts in Massachusetts, while there is a Dunkin’ available at almost every corner. The Westborough location, in particular, has the added challenge of being directly across from a Dunkin’. While Dunkin’ offers affordable prices and reliability, Rocco’s prices are much higher making their items more of a luxury than a go-to spot like Dunkin’ is.
Overall, Roccos is a place you go once for the experience, but it is not likely to become a staple for your morning routine. It’s a nice treat every now and then, but personally, I would stick to Dunkin’.
