Welcome to the Biweekly Sports Buzz. This blog will recap what’s happened in sports every two weeks from Algonquin, college and pro levels across all sports. We will post polls on Instagram to get intel on what you guys want to hear about as well.
The ARHS Buzz
At our school, our athletics have been flourishing. First up is gymnastics who won on Senior Night against Shrewsbury on Jan. 29. Boys’ basketball had a tough loss to Wachusett but bounced back against Fitchburg to go 1-1 during the week of Feb. 3. Boys’ hockey won their annual game in honor of Brian Arsenault 3-1 against Hopedale on Feb. 1. Finally in indoor track, senior Miles Lipka set a school record for High Jump, jumping 6’ 8” during the league meet at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.
College Buzz
At the collegiate level, sports have been wild. In womens’ basketball, NYU has been tearing it up. Including last season, the Violets have won 49 straight games at the Division III level, the 16th longest streak in any division of womens’ college basketball. On Feb. 1, mens’ college basketball saw a historic day for the underdog. Eleven of the Associated Press (AP) polls’ top 25 teams lost, tying the most in a single day in men’s college basketball history. One week later, on Feb. 8, we watched the first seed Auburn and second seed Duke lose on the same day, shooting Alabama fans up in the standings. Yet, Auburn keeps that coveted first seed in the AP poll. Lastly, the annual Beanpot hockey tournament ended this week in the final at TD Garden between No. 1 Boston College and No. 8 Boston University with Boston University coming out on top winning 4-1.
The Pros Buzz
In professional sports it was a wild couple of weeks across many sports. The National Basketball Association (NBA) had its annual trade deadline with many stars moving across the league. Former Chicago Bulls shooting guard Zach Lavine was traded to the Sacramento Kings as the former Kings point guard De’Aaron Fox was dealt to the San Antonio Spurs in a three-way deal. The Milwaukee Bucks sent small forward Khris Middleton to the Washington Wizards for star forward Kyle Kuzma. Jimmy Butler finally got out of South Beach as the Miami Heat traded him out west to the Golden State Warriors for forward Andrew Wiggins. But the largest trade of the NBA deadline also may be the worst in NBA history. Star point guard Luka Doncic was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers for star forward Anthony Davis. This trade has sent shockwaves through Dallas, causing fans to protest outside the stadium.
In the National Hockey League (NHL), Alex Ovechkin has crept within 15 goals of the all-time leading goal scorer in NHL history, Wayne Gretsky. The National Football League (NFL) had its NFL Honors Night, honoring all the great players and awarding the season’s best players. Josh Allen took home his first career MVP award as Saquon Barkley took home the Offensive Player of the Year in his first season with the Philadelphia Eagles. Lastly, the Super Bowl happened this past Sunday with the Philadelphia Eagles taking home the win and dethroning the back-to-back champion Kansas City Chiefs.
I’ll be back in two weeks to bring you your next sports update. See you then!
