Game of Thrones…Not your Grandma’s fantasy novel (REVIEW)

Ian Bourdon, Staff Writer

Over past years, it seems apparent that countless fantasy writers have worked tirelessly to mimic works like Harry Potter and in doing so have created a whole genre of books, almost identical in characters, structure, and themes. Although it may look deceiving as just-your-average fantasy book, Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin is unwilling to conform to the monotony of the fantasy world. Instead, it leaves readers desperately searching for a protagonist in a plot where even the most good hearted of characters have dark secrets.

Set in the distant kingdom of Westeros, seven noble houses quickly take action when their king is killed in the most unfortunate of hunting accidents. As hand of the king, Lord Eddard Stark rapidly raises suspicion of his rival house, House Lannister, and begins to investigate the matter which uncovers a series of lies and schemes – both treasonous and dangerous. In this novel, alliances are tested, enemies are made, and five kings are forged in the fires of turmoil as they seek to gain control of the coveted Iron Throne.

Martin keeps his writing direct and concise yet manages to drag out scenes with dialogue that becomes repetitive and monotonous. Huge sections of the book remain barren with little to no action and inordinate amounts of information being thrown at readers. After finishing these sections, it does feel rewarding to finally enter a chapter or two of intense violence and excitement where Martin brilliantly allows the reader to enter the book in a way not often seen by writers today.

Martin clearly shows his efficiency at creating a highly complex plot filled with very 3-dimensional characters in a book that readers can barely put down. Although a little dry in some areas, Martin can clearly create vibrant and luscious descriptions that manage to enrapture readers from the very first page. For anyone who is searching for that perfect fantasy book, containing a unique plot and a variety of colorful characters, this one will be perfect.
