Baseball embraces youth, energy

Boys baseball returns seven players as they look to revamp their image and improve from last year heading into this spring’s season.

“This season is unique,” head coach Mike Mocerino said. “We’re looking for a new identity. We need to gel together.”

Returning pitcher and infielder senior Ryan Solomon is committed to play Division one baseball at Northeastern University, and plans to help guide new players to a good season.

“We have a young team, and a lot of potential to run with,” Solomon said. “If we stay focused, we have a good chance of success, and hopefully making it to something like the Central Mass finals.”

Senior catcher David Wrin is excited about the new potential, despite losing twelve seniors from last season.

“We’re young, we’re energetic, and we’re looking to get at it,” Wrin said.

Senior third baseman Zach Foster is seeking to improve from last season, but not just record wise.

“Last year our leadership could have been better,” Foster said. “[This years seniors] are looking to improve there and make the best of the season.”

The coaching staff have a lot of spots to fill, and according to Mocerino, finding the perfect player takes more than athleticism.

“We look at things like coachability and attitude,” Mocerino said. “In baseball, you fail more than you succeed, so I need to see if a player can improve on that failure and make it into a positive.”

A few other returning players to look out for are pitcher junior Connor Henderson,  center fielder junior Nolan Kessinger, and pitcher junior Charles Gallagher. Junior first baseman Matt Geoffrion is also back for his first season after receiving Tommy John surgery.
