REVIEW: ‘Reminders of Him’ depicts a challenging predicament with a passionate romance
February 10, 2023
Colleen Hoover’s “Reminders of Him” tells a captivating story of an intense, ethical dilemma that will have you on the edge of your seat.
Each chapter of the book alternates between two perspectives. The first follows Kenna Rowan, a young, lonely mother who was recently released from prison and is trying to reunite with her four-year old daughter, Diem, who she lost custody of. The other main character is Ledger Ward, who is a bar owner with a sweet soul. Ledger has acted as a father figure to Diem, and must decide whether he allows Kenna to meet her, something that could potentially put Diem’s safety at risk.
Throughout the novel, a physical and emotional attraction between Kenna and Ledger develops, making the situation even more complicated.
“Reminders of Him” was published about a year ago, on January 19, 2022. In the past year, Hoover has gained popularity among teen and adult readers, with over 1.9 million followers on Instagram. Her novels are successful because of the raw emotion shown from characters and the suspense she creates.
Although the beginning of the novel was rather boring due to a slowly developing backstory, it became more intriguing later on. Conflicts build and the plot escalates with each chapter until it’s impossible to put the book back down.
What made this book stand out was how dynamic it was. The narrator rotation between Kenna and Ledger added multiple perspectives, creating a more riveting and heart-wrenching story.
The characters in this novel are complex, which builds a multidimensional storyline. With most romance novels, the endings are predictable, but “Reminders of Him” was an exception that always had me curious about what was going to happen.
“Reminders of Him” is truly a book like no other. It’s both heartwarming and heartbreaking as it tells a beautiful story of hope and tragedy. It has something for everyone, and is fantastic for new readers as well as romance lovers.
