THE ALGONQUIN HARBINGER

EDITORIAL: Let your voice be heard

In recent months and years, there have been many discussions regarding the right to express ideas that may make some uncomfortable. From laws requiring teachers to take inventory on all of their books and decipher which are or aren’t appropriate, to discussions about what should and shouldn’t be taught in schools, the importance of expression and the freedom to educate ourselves on what we deem fit seems more relevant than ever.

As editors of a student-run newspaper, we have come to understand the importance and privilege of being able to express and share our views. The Harbinger is a means for students to become involved in their community, as well as a platform to represent the ideals of the student body and give voice to individuals. All content that is published by The Harbinger is determined by students, instead of administration or advisers.

Without the ability to be open and honest about our opinions and observations, The Harbinger would not be what it is today. Our goals as editors have consistently been to inform and interact with our community, and the First Amendment allows us to do this in a way that is authentic and genuine to us. As a result of this approach, we strive to report in an impartial manner, and hope our reporting not only informs but also starts conversations within our community.

Because this newspaper thrives on student engagement, readers are welcome and encouraged to write letters to the editor in response to content or things that are happening in our community. If you are interested in submitting pieces or policies to the staff, more information about the submission process can be found in the “about” section of our website. In the past, The Harbinger has published letters from students, faculty, alumni and parents. In addition, we encourage readers to voice their opinions respectfully through online comments at the bottom of each article.

We as a community are stronger when we are able to learn about perspectives and ideas that challenge us to think deeply. We are also stronger when there are opportunities for our voices to be heard. Please join us this year in having your voice heard by responding to our student surveys, being interviewed as sources for our articles, sharing coverage ideas or submitting a letter to the editor.
