Boys’ track wrapped up a strong season, finishing second to Wachusett in Western Division One Championships on Saturday, May 25.

The team finished better than they expected.

“The team was expecting to get fourth overall,” senior captain Matt Madamba said. “Our major competition was Wachusett, Shrewsbury, and Long Meadow.”

Madamba finished third in the 400 M, with a time of 49.56, qualifying him for states. Other seniors who also qualified for states include senior captain Alex Lemieux, who came in third for the 200 M, running a time of 22.84, and senior captain Alex Rybarczyk, also finishing third for 400 M hurdles with a time of 57.41. The boys 4×400 M consisting of Alex Lemieux, Alex Rybarczyk, Tom Haugen, Matt Madamba placed second as well qualifying them for states.

In the field events, junior Austin Mowry finished second for high jump, jumping a height of 6-04. Senior John Bai placed second in pole vault with a height of 13-00.

Sophomore Cole Gamache believes their success this season has been due to the hard work they put in during practice.

“We take the easy days easy and the hard days hard,” Gamache said. “Listen to the coach, stay mentally tough, and don’t give up during your race.”

Senior captain Tommy Stimson agrees that the team’s performance this year is due to their dedication. However, he also believes his supportive teammates can be credited for the team’s success.

“Everyone works hard and we push each other to be better,” Stimson said. “We do our workouts together and get the job done”

As the season comes to an end, Madamba leaves words of advice for next year.

“Stay close as a team,” Madamba said. “Being a close team helps with morale and makes it so everyone puts their best effort forward. Everyone is going to try their hardest when they know the guy next to them is fighting their heart out. It makes them think that they have to give it their all in practice and at the meet. Never stop aspiring to be the best you can be.”
