Students left with questions regarding BYOD program

In response to “BYOD delayed until second term

Dear Harbinger Editor:

The recent article (BYOD delayed until second term, September 27th 2018) reminded me how frustrated I am at the thought of Algonquin’s upcoming BYOD policy.

Although I am excited Algonquin is becoming more advanced technologically, I feel the administration failed to adequately inform us on the new policy. The end of the first term is approaching quickly, and students are still left wondering what this new policy exactly entails.

Since the beginning of the school year, I have personally only had one teacher tell us about the new policy, which was helpful, but of course she can’t answer all of our questions. We are left with several unanswered questions as the administration is keeping quiet about the policy. There was no announcement or school meeting to inform students of the new policy, so we are having to figure things out on our own. Administration believes we are upset because of the change, but in reality we are just frustrated by the lack of conversation on the topic. Students and even teachers are left confused and frustrated with the lack of communication around this new policy.

I feel as though the school needs to find a better way to communicate such a big change in our daily school life to all students and teachers. Something such as class meetings with each grade, or even just a simple announcement informing students of the new policy would help clear up confusion within the school. I am excited that Algonquin is beginning to join other schools in taking advantage of the benefits of technology, but am disappointed in the school and administration for their lack of communication and conversation about the new BYOD policy.

Sincerely,

Meaghan Kelleher
