Boys rugby: working their way to team status

With the goal of being recognized as a team, this spring will be the boys rugby club’s second year as a club and hopefully its last.

“[I] started the team; there was no team before last year. We recruited a coach, Joe Nelson, who volunteered to help out,” explained boys rugby club advisor and special education teacher Sherry Nolan-Hess.

This season the rugby club hopes to prove themselves as a team.

“[We are] working to prove ourself and hoping next year [we will become a team and a team] we need to meet all the criteria,” said Nolan-Hess.

“We started as a club in MYRO [Massachusetts Youth Rugby Organization] league. We still have to pay the athletic fee, but technically we’re not a team. It takes about three years.” said senior Freddie Pim.

“[This year’s goals are] recruitment, to develop strongly, be serious about the game but love the sport. Overall to become recognized,” said Nolan-Hess.

“This year we have one home game. We’ve never had a home game before,” said Nolan-Hess.
