The boys tennis team is hoping for a strong performance from all of the players.

Tennis, like every other sport, practice hard to prepare for their games.

“We practice every day during the week and then occasionally on the weekends if there was a practice cancelled during the week,” science teacher coach Gerald Cushing.

This is Cushing’s second year coaching the T-Hawks.

“Our goal for this year is to improve on our performance from last year. We want to make the state tournaments and improve our underclassmen to fill the spots of the seniors we will be losing next year,” said Cushing.

The team is preparing to rebuild so the underclassmen can come out strong next season and play great tennis.

Last year the team had a slow start with a strong finish. “We had a slow start to the season but the second half of the season we improved to end up with an overall of 7-9 with a nice finish to the year,” said Cushing.

Senior James Hawn has been playing varsity tennis for Algonquin since his freshman year and has a strong passion for the game.

Hawn practices every day with the team during the season and then improves his game during the off season.

“I usually go to a lesson once a week with one of the coaches at the Westborough Swim and Tennis club…I play year round and compete in the USTA tournaments in the fall and winter,” said Hawn.
