MOVIE REVIEW: Fast Times: laughs and drug rugs

Chris Shoener, Staff Writer

Life was always a constant battle for Lucas, but he tries to turn tables when finally has something to battle for. Lucas (Corey Haim) is an academically advanced bug enthusiast who has a passion for classical music and the new girl in town. Judging by his appearance, hobbies and lack of aggression, Lucas is not an ideal member of the Park High High school football team. Maggie (Kerri Green) is a tennis player, the new girl in town and Lucas’s new crush, which he meets on a beautiful sunny afternoon when he sees her playing tennis and introduces himself. Lucas and Maggie spend the majority of summer together and become close friends, always sharing laughs and great memories. After school starts Lucas introduces Maggie to one of his few friends, Cappie (Charli Sheen) who is the captain and quarterback of the football team. Lucas has faced years of bullying but the one person to always stick up for him is Cappie. Maggie and Cappie become close friends over time, creating a flirty relationship that causes Alise (Courtney Thorne-Smith), Cappies girlfriend of three years to break up with him, leaving Maggie to be his shoulder to cry on. After Lucas sees them kissing and hears that Cappie has convinced Maggie to try out for the cheerleading team, he has had enough and is convinced that his last chance to win over the girl of his dreams is by trying out for the football team. Lucas’s attempt at saving the opening game and his chances with Maggie lead him to a world of hurt, but he learns a lot about himself and how many friends he actually has that care about him more than he knows.

The movie Lucas was written and directed by David Seltzer in 1986, and is an American teen comedy.  Seltzer is an American writer who is also responsible for movies like The Omen, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, and Bird on a Wire. The movie consisted of beautiful scenery, and a great mix of instrumental music that fantastically complemented the appropriate scenes. This light hearted movie is easily related to by high school students and does a great job of throwing in funny one liners and hilarious insults between characters when the tension is high. Overall, the movie is entertaining, funny and well written, it does a great job portraying the classic determination of the underdog and how hard work and determination always pays off, even when things don’t play out the way you planned. “Im ready to go in, I can run fast, I can win this game….look, just give me one chance, one play” Lucas’s reasoning with the coach that gives him his shot to be on top of the world.
