A cappella groups from Algonquin, Hudson, and Marlborough were joined by the University of Rochester Yellow Jackets to perform in the third annual Acapocalypse on March 13 in the auditorium.

The a cappella groups included Algonquin’s Algoncapella, Algonquin’s Ladies First, Hudson High School’s Camerata, the Hudson High Notes, and Marlborough High School. Each group serenaded the audience with several songs, mainly of the pop genre, and were complemented by the University of Rochester Yellow Jackets all-male a cappella group.

Junior Jen Piekarz, a member of Algoncapella and Ladies First, was amazed by how supportive and encouraging the Yellow Jackets were to all the groups performing.

“The Yellow Jackets brought us all in groups and taught us to move around and have a ton of fun onstage,” Piekarz said. “It was cool because we had only met them an hour before [the performance].”

Under the blazing stage lights, freshman Karmyn Shreeve takes a solo as one of the youngest members of the night.

Some songs performed throughout the night were “Toxic” by Britney Spears, “Back to Black” by Amy Winehouse, “Sorry” by Justin Bieber, and an original song by Marlborough High School’s Noah Ogden called “Love, Love, Love.”

The Yellow Jackets wrapped up the two hour show with an interactive performance featuring all of the groups that had performed and taught the audience a dance to participate in during the final song, a mashup of “Wavin’ Flag” by K’NAAN and “Waka Waka” by Shakira.

“Singing with the Yellow Jackets was definitely my favorite part of the night,” Piekarz said. “It was so much fun.”

Junior Mia Murray has been a part of all three of Algonquin’s a cappella groups throughout her three years in high school.

It was clear how passionate the singers onstage were about the music they were performing.

Senior and co-leader of Ladies First, Sumati Rangaraj, said that her participation in a cappella and the Acapocalypse was rooted in her love for music.

“It’s just so much fun,” Rangaraj said. “It brings me so much joy to be around people who share that same passion and I just think it’s so invaluable.”
