The wrestling team tackled the Division II state tournament on February 17 and 18, with standout athletes claiming titles and securing their spots in the next round at the New England tournament on March 4.

At the state tournament held on their home turf at Algonquin, senior captains Drew Cozzolino and Joe Vencile pinned their way to second in their respective weight classes, while senior captain Bryce Finnegan secured third.

These three athletes also reached their goals of 100 pins throughout their Algonquin wrestling career, a great accomplishment and representation of their hard work.

At the All State tournament on February 24 and 25, where the top six athletes from each division compete, Vencile claimed sixth while Finnegan placed seventh.

“I think that our wrestling team is something special and not just one kid can be attributed to the success, we each support each other and work as a unit to reach our goals during the season,” Vencile said.

According to teammates, the hard work of these athletes all season is paying off in the best possible way.

“With the team winning sectionals along with all three captains winning and going on to place in the top three at states, I think this postseason was a great reflection of the work we put in this season,” Cozzolino said.

Vencile and Finnegan will be competing in the New England tournament on March 4 in Providence, Rhode Island to represent Algonquin and bring home a title for T-hawk nation.

“Without my teammates and coaches I especially wouldn’t have made it this far so I tip my hat to them,” Vencile said.
