With a successful 4-1 season underway, the girls’ gymnastics team is looking to go all the way to winning Leagues.

“We’re trying to get the league title back,” senior captain Sam Brazeau said. “We haven’t had it in the past couple years, but I think this year we have a really good chance of getting it back.”

At the end of last season they lost some key senior athletes, so this year it’s been a real team effort to bring in wins. The freshmen have been doing a great job of raising the scores.

Some talented freshmen include Sequoia Troung on bars and beam, Elizabeth Shaw on beam and floor, and Demetra Safiol on vault and floor; along with the rest of the hardworking team they have clinched a record of 4-1.

I’ve been seeing a lot of fight, determination, and improvement with everyone’s skills and confidence.

Behind all the wins is a strong, close team dedicated to advancing as far as they can.

“I feel like they’ve really come together as a team this year, and they’ve definitely improved all of their events since the beginning of the season,” coach Jenn Crook said.

With all their hard work this season, winning leagues seems plausible.

“I’ve been seeing a lot of fight, determination, and improvement with everyone’s skills and confidence,” Brazeau said.

The fight will have to continue in order to beat Shrewsbury at Leagues.

Algonquin has defeated Shrewsbury for the first time in years this season on December 28 scoring 132 points over Shrewsbury’s 129.65. Shrewsbury came back strong with their win against Algonquin on Saturday, January 14, proving they will be tough competition for Leagues.

“We’ve always been neck and neck [with Shrewsbury],” junior Emma Rosen said. “We just competed against them and they beat us by a couple tenths… that’s like a pointed toe.”

Catch the gymnastics team flip out at Leagues on February 11 at Shrewsbury High (subject to change) to support the team in an exciting match.

“It should be a really good matchup between the two teams,” Crook said.
