The Civic feeds your fancier side
July 20, 2016
As I drove up to a tall, white building overlooking the Westborough Country Club, my hopes that this would be a fantastic restaurant were high. A large sign bearing the name of the new restaurant, The Civic, stood in front of an almost completely filled parking lot.
The restaurant’s interior didn’t fail to meet the impressive looks of the exterior. Tall windows lining the grey walls, wooden tables, each with its own small vase of flowers, and a small lounge complete with a fireplace gave the huge restaurant a more welcoming feel.
The wait staff were friendly and efficient, seating us quickly and bringing our drinks served in mason jars, which were used creatively instead of cups. Our waiter was able to answer all the questions we had about the menu, and in no time at all we were ordering.
According to the menu, The Civic uses only ingredients that are locally grown to create all of their dishes.
The appetizer looked delicious as it arrived at our table. Homemade potato chips, baked so that they were crispy, with just enough salt to add flavor, were served with a side of wild ramp onion dip ($6.00).
Soon after our main entrees arrived. I ordered a dish called “Chicken Under A Brick”, a flavorful meal that included a roast chicken brushed with spices, roast potatoes, and a side of rhubarb ($19.00). It was one of the best meals I’ve ever had in a restaurant. The chicken was well cooked, instead of underdone or too dry, which it can often be at restaurants. The only criticism I have is that the potatoes, while full of flavor, were too soft for my liking. I would’ve liked them better if they’d been more crispy.
My sister ordered the fish and chips ($17.00), which she enjoyed. Though she doesn’t usually like French fries, she was happy with the crispy fries made by the restaurant.
After dinner came the dessert, which was easily the best part of the entire meal. A gigantic slice of decadent chocolate cake covered in thick chocolate frosting, chocolate chips, hot fudge, and espresso whipped cream was appropriately called Death By Chocolate ($7.00).
Overall, The Civic was one of the best restaurants I’ve ever been to. And while it can be a little pricy, it’s the perfect place for a special occasion. Just remember to make a reservation if you’re going on a weekend- it can get crowded fast.
