The National Honor Society inducted 104 new juniors and seniors during a ceremony held on January 11.
NHS functions on the basis of character, service, scholarship, and leadership. Juniors and seniors with a GPA of 4.0 or above are eligible to apply, and after application they have a chance of being inducted into the society.
The ceremony was run by the NHS officers, with the help of advisers Nikki Ruffo and Angela Moll. This year, far more people were inducted than in years past.
“We usually have around 60 to 80 [inductees], but this new grade is going to have a lot of new and smart people,” treasurer Henry Liu said.
The officers all expressed their passion for the society through a series of speeches as they conducted the ceremony.
Throughout the night, current members of the society worked hard to ensure that the new members received a smooth induction ceremony.
Besides their role in the induction ceremony, the officers plan activities and service projects to enhance the society throughout the year.
“We have about 80 members right now,” officer Darby Foster said. “It’s a very big group, and we are all united by similar values and we want to make sure that everybody goes to similar activities and participates in projects together.”
For the new inductees, the activities and service projects will be beginning soon. The existing members and officers will be available to guide the new members of the society until June.
“Make sure you keep up with service throughout your high school career,” NHS President Brooks Gingrich said. “[The next step is] helping out with all of the Algonquin service projects that NHS offers because that’s really where the value of the club is.”
“This group really is a strong group of students, full of character, service, scholarship, and leadership, and I can’t wait to see what next year is going to be,” Ruffo said.
