Take a deep breath, it’s just prom
January 25, 2016
“Who is going to be my date?”
“What if my dress doesn’t fit right?”
“Where am I going to take pictures?”
Too many junior girls are stressing out over prom when it is still three months away. The “2016 Algonquin Prom” Facebook group was made in the beginning of December, yet prom isn’t until April 30. Girls have already began posting pictures of the dresses they plan on wearing, and some people have began planning who they are going to go with.
No matter the circumstance, prom is going to happen and the experience someone gets out of it is dependent on themselves. If they want to have a good time, they shouldn’t get stressed out and should instead focus on the positives. Or at the least they should wait until prom is closer to begin worrying about it.
Another problem with people already making prom decisions is that a lot can change in a matter of three months. What if someone ends up not liking the dress they spent so much of their savings on? What if they have a falling out with the person who is supposed to be their date? There are endless possibilities for disaster, and they all begin with one common factor: preparing too early.
Prom anxiety has a domino effect. Once one person buys her dress, or finds a date, that’s when everyone else becomes worried and stressed out.
Senior Casey Reynolds attended prom last year, had a great time, and believes that there is no need to be stressed out about it so early.
“You don’t have to get your dress early because prom isn’t going to move. It’s nothing to be stressed out about,” Reynolds said.
I understand the pressure some girls feel surrounding prom. The prices of a dress, makeup, nails, and spray tans can add up to an outrageous amount, and preparation for that may need to start a few months before prom. However, we don’t need to make that stress public. Please resist the urge to post about every little worry you have!
Everyone needs to take a deep breath and calm down. Take it one day at a time, and stop stressing out over something that is so far away. Prom is only one night. It should be fun! Let’s not ruin it with so much pre-prom stress.
