Golf drives to third place
December 4, 2015
The golf team placed third in the state tournament on October 27, after winning districts, due to their depth, competitive drive and close bonds with each other.
The team finished states, which took place at The Haven Country Club in Boylston, with a total score of 313, tying with St. John’s for third place behind BC High (312) and St. John’s Prep (307). Senior captain Connor Henderson (77), and senior Andrew Warfield (78) were the low scorers for the team.
Coach Bob Cullen is very proud of the team.
“It was the best team I’ve had in my 15 years of coaching,” Cullen said. “The most talented, driven, competitive group I’ve had and they were the closest, tight knit group I’ve had.”
Henderson led the team in scoring during the regular season, while Warfield was the low scorer at leagues and districts, scoring 72 and 70, respectively. The two players agreed that the team’s drive and competitive nature contributed to their success, but they also identified their depth as a key factor to their impressive season.
“All eight guys could contribute on any given day,” Henderson said. “If you didn’t have your best day you knew someone was going to back you up.”
“We have a lot of guys who can come in with good scores,” Warfield said.
The State Final proved particularly challenging because of freezing conditions which caused a two hour delay.
“It really affects your mental game as sitting around doing nothing is tedious,” Henderson said. “We tried to take our minds off it by going to Matt Budz’s house and playing ping pong.”
Warfield believes the conditions impacted the team’s play.
“The ball didn’t go as far because it was cold,” Warfield said. “Players were stiff. The two hour delay changed preparation because we had to wait.”
Despite not taking first at states, this team still enjoyed a very successful season.
“It was fun being on the golf team,” senior Andrew Nicolo said.
“This team was a family,” Henderson said. “We could share anything with each other and that contributed to our success. Not all the teams that I have been on had that attitude.”
