Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, and with that comes many treats centred around the loved-filled holiday. Whether you are eating these at home alone with a nice rom-com in the background or giving them as a gift to your partner, these are the top 5 Valentine’s Day treats that are essential for a perfect Valentine’s Day.
#5: Conversational hearts
These sugar filled treats are the classic Valentine’s Day candy. People either love them or hate them, but for me, they’re pure nostalgia. They might not be the best tasting candy out there, but every bite takes me back to elementary school Valentine exchanges, decorated bags, handwritten cards and trading candy with friends to see who scored the best treats. They remind me of a simpler time, when the only thing that mattered was who’s valentine was the cutest and who brought in the good candy.
#4: Heart box of chocolates
Nothing says Valentine’s Day quite like a heart-shaped box of chocolates. Opening one feels like a game of chance, you never quite know what you’re going to get. Sometimes it’s your favorite caramel, and sometimes it’s… not. But honestly, the surprise is part of the fun. These boxes give you the opportunity to try flavors you may never choose willingly for yourself, and you could end up discovering a new favorite. The only reason this treat doesn’t rank higher is the real possibility of biting into something you definitely didn’t sign up for. I love a good box of chocolates, and this box is no expectation.
#3: Reese’s hearts
You can’t go wrong with a good Reese’s treat, and the Valentine’s Day heart version makes it even better. The peanut butter-to-chocolate ratio is somehow even more perfect in this shape, making every bite rich and satisfying. It’s the ideal pick-me-up whether you’re celebrating with someone special or just treating yourself. Simple, reliable and always delicious, this treat is one of the best.
#2: Chocolate covered strawberries
What a great combination of my two favorite things: strawberries and chocolate. The nice crunch of the hard chocolate around the juicy strawberry is to die for. Along with the different types of chocolate, different drizzles and sprinkles on top, you can customize it to what you really want. The only negative about this treat is that they can be a pain to make: you have to melt the chocolate, wash, dry and cut the strawberries, dip them in the chocolate and then let them freeze for a little bit, making the whole process a hassle. Though you can buy them, they are way over my personal budget during this time of the month.
#1: Brownie batter donuts
I count the days until Dunkin’ releases their Valentine’s Day menu just for this dessert. I dream about this when it’s not on the menu, and when it finally comes out, I wake up extra early (and I’ll have you know I am not a morning person) just to get a bite of this perfect treat. The chocolate-to-donut ratio is impeccable, something that is just not replicable by anyone else. The best way to eat it is to split it in half so in every bite you get a little bit of chocolate and donut. The heart shape adds a little twist to the basic donut, and the sprinkles on top add the perfect crunch. Rounding around $1.69 per donut, it’s a perfect way to celebrate Valentine’s Day without breaking the bank.
