The French Honor Society (FHS) was one of many school organizations negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic; however, the group has rebounded and this year, it welcomed 19 new members, all united by a shared passion for the French language and culture.
Thanks to the dedication of juniors Simon Linden, Laura White and Stephanie Davis, the FHS has made a strong comeback since it was restarted in March of 2024. Led by co-presidents Linden and White, the FHS has made a notable impact at Algonquin through events such as dessert night, French cuisine tastings, a Carnival booth and support for exchange students. While these events require significant planning, the club’s meetings also offer members a chance to unwind and connect.
“During the meetings, we usually plan events that are coming up, and when we’re done with planning, we play games, chill and relax,” Linden said.
Linden emphasized the importance of having a French Honor Society at ARHS to raise awareness and appreciation for the French language.
“We want to promote French culture around our school, as it can provide an interesting and different perspective on the world,” Linden said.

The organization also provides opportunities for leadership and personal growth among its officers, including secretary junior Altea Mehillaj and social media manager Davis.
“[Being a part of FHS] got me more interested in French, and it got me to do something and not just sit around,” Linden said.
Applications for the French Honor Society will open in the spring. Interested students must complete an application highlighting their skills and write a few short passages explaining why they want to join. Club officers and advisers then collaborate to carefully vet each applicant to determine the best fit for the group.
