The ski team, led by senior captains Lia Borden, Emelia Beauchesne and Grady Martinek, finished their season with the girls placing fourth in the league and the boys placing sixth. Five skiers went on to participate in states for the postseason. Borden reviewed the team’s season.
How was the season overall?
“I think the season went really well. We had a lot of new racers this year; a lot of freshmen and [sophomores] with a range of experience with ski racing… Both the guys and girls all definitely improved throughout the whole season.
What was a highlight of the season?
“I think a highlight is our team really bonded this year, so we’re pretty close, we all got to know each other. Everyone knew everyone, so it was definitely a more fun dynamic this year.”
Who were some of your key players?
“For girls, the top three were me, Emmy [Beauchesne], and [junior] Cara Leonard… For the guys, we have Grady Martinek, [senior] Evan Hojlo, [juniors] Reilly Silvia and Dylan Steele, who all either ran in states or were close to running in states.”
What was the most challenging part of the season?
“The most challenging part for people who weren’t experienced with racing is the conditions this year. They were better than last year, but it definitely got pretty icy throughout our practices so everyone had to adjust to that.”
What is your team dynamic like?
“This year, everyone is close. Many of the newer and younger racers are learning from the older ones. We have lots of energy and spirit compared to the teams we are racing against. Overall, it has been a great season with everyone on the team.”
What is coming up for the team next year?
“Next year, we have a bunch of juniors moving up as seniors. We’re excited with banquet in about a week, where the new captains will be chosen… We have some pretty good underclassmen that will definitely move up, and I’m excited to see how they do next year.”
