Sophomore Izzy Miranda has stepped into her role as class president with enthusiasm and a commitment to fostering community among her peers.
Miranda was initially intrigued by the position her freshman year but hesitated to run, unsure if she would be able to balance the responsibilities of being class president alongside playing on the girls’ varsity soccer team. By her sophomore year, however, Miranda was ready to lead and make a difference for her class.
Running for this position was very nerve-racking for Miranda, as she had little experience with public speaking. Despite her fears, she gave a speech that won over her peers.
“I was really surprised at first [after hearing I was elected], but I felt so happy and filled with joy and excitement,” Miranda said.
Since taking office, she has already made strides in her leadership role, organizing successful fundraisers like a recent car wash, where the Class of 2027 raised around $1,700.
“[The car wash] was so much fun and everyone was kind of bonded together,” Miranda said.
Class adviser and Social Studies teacher Kerriann Lessard appreciates Miranda’s energy.
“Izzy brings great energy and overall enthusiasm for creating events for the class and building class spirit,” Lessard said.
Miranda works hard to ensure every student feels heard in weekly meetings by emphasizing communication and having fun.
“Being inclusive and kind to others is so significant in creating a group bond,” Miranda said.
Her approach fosters a supportive environment where students can share their ideas.
“We separate into groups so it’s easier for people to pitch their ideas, rather than going in front of the whole class,” Miranda said.
These meetings focus on various topics, and Miranda always encourages new members to join and share their ideas. She hopes that by having more student voices heard with greater involvement, there will be an increase in pride and spirit.
“I definitely want to focus on the Pep Rally and how we are going to upgrade our school spirit from last year,” Miranda said.
In addition to building excitement for school activities, Miranda’s focus is fundraising for next year’s prom. She plans to extend fundraising efforts beyond school, including community events with social opportunities. Miranda also hopes to promote and support the wider community by raising money.
“One of the ideas I want to do is a food truck, which would help small businesses,” Miranda said.
The responsibilities of class president can be overwhelming, especially for someone juggling academics and athletics, but she’s developed systems to stay organized.
“I started using a planner this year, and Sundays are my reset day, where I do my homework,” Miranda said. “I usually start my slides for what we are doing for the week in the meetings, and I write everything I have in my planner and make sure every single day I have all my homework done.”
Miranda says that in spite of the workload, the whole experience is “definitely worth it.”
