Algonquin students now have the opportunity to get real-life experiences without having to leave their houses.
Work-Based Learning Alliance is working with Algonquin’s Career Exploration and Innovation leader Michele Kaelin to offer students paid virtual internships. Students will have the opportunity to understand what it’s like to be in a work environment and get to work with five to seven high schoolers from all over the state. In total students will be working 100 hours, spread out over six weeks, and earn $15 an hour, Massachusetts’ minimum wage.
There are three main categories that students can choose from: internships, cybersecurity projects, and computer-aided design (CAD). All of these are team-based projects based on a real industry and project. Cyber Security projects and CAD also work with an industry expert. All of these opportunities will give students real-world experience.
“I am excited about the idea of expanding access to internship opportunities to students,” Kaelin said.
Although they don’t have a specific restriction on age, they do recommend students be at least 16 years old because of the responsibility that comes along with being involved in these projects.
“Although you don’t have to be 16 in order to apply, it is recommended due to the self-discipline,” Kaelin said. “Some key characteristics that students should have are good time management, leadership and organization.”
With such a new program, Kaelin is open to improvement.
“It’s new to me, it’s new to Algonquin so I really appreciate getting feedback,” Kaelin said. “I would love to hear from students, and their pros and cons. It’s very helpful.”
