The softball team ended their season with a 5-13 record. Senior captains Gianna Esposito and Tessa James reflected on the season.
How is the season going overall?
“I think this is a much better season than we’ve had in the past,” Esposito said. “In previous years, we’ve kind of struggled in games and honestly gotten mercied a lot. But this year, even though we don’t have the best record, a lot of the games have been very close and competitive.”
What was a highlight of the season?
“Beating North Middlesex because I think they were definitely expecting us to come and for them to mercy us, basically, and we beat them,” James said. “ I think it definitely showed them and other teams around us that we are a competitive team.”
Who are some of your key players?
“Tessa James,” Esposito said. “I would also say [junior] Phoebe Lefebvre; she’s our catcher.”
“Gianna [Esposito],” James said. “…And [sophomore] Emily Ruiz, our pitcher, and [senior] Jessilyn Baez, our center fielder. She’s really stepped up this year and held down our outfield.”
What was the most challenging part of the season?
“Playing very well in a game as a team as a whole and losing a very competitive, close game,” Esposito said. “We had a decent amount of those, and it’s really aggravating sometimes when we play so well, but it shows so much improvement from us in the past, and it’s really exciting to see what the future of this team holds even if we are losing”
What was your team dynamic like?
“Everyone steps up and is a leader at their own time,” James said. “We’ve had freshmen and sophomores become starters and really become a leader within a game. There’s not necessarily one overarching leader or person; we all work together to be a team.”
What is coming up for the team next year?
“We have five seniors on our team, so that does open up some positions for underclassmen,” Esposito said. “But we will have a lot of returners next year, which is really exciting, and I think that this team’s bond is going to continue to grow and that the team is going to continue to improve and get better and learn. ”
