I still recall the start of my first summer vacation, June of my kindergarten year, crying as my mother told me that this in fact was not the end of my school career: I had 12 more years to go.
Now as I stand on the brink of graduation, I can’t help but feel as though time slipped through my fingers far too quickly. From triumphs to challenges, my school career has molded me into the person I am today. In that, I have three pieces of advice for all readers.
Be Curious: Uncover the Hidden Gems
Our community is a melting pot of stories waiting to be discovered. You may be surprised by the diverse perspectives our “bubble” holds, between survivors of 9/11, stories akin to that of Malala Yousafzai and experts from all fields. Small talk may seem difficult at first, but it is undoubtedly something that can grow into meaningful conversations; all that it takes is true curiosity, or faking it until you make it! By actively listening, asking questions and thinking critically, we can unearth a treasure trove of wisdom that enriches our lives and broadens our understanding of the world.
Change Your Perspective: Step into the Unknown
One of the most transformative experiences of my journey was stage crew. Initially hesitant and overwhelmed by the unfamiliar territory, I soon found myself immersed in a realm of lights, sound and new possibilities. Stepping out of your comfort zone to join an activity may feel like a chore or a mere resume booster, but once you have found the right place, lessons learned will never be forgotten. Take that beginner coding class and you will never take technology for granted. Try cross country, and learn a new appreciation for nature and fitness. Join stage crew, and never see a performance without thinking about mechanisms behind the scenes. Trust me, I’ve done it all.
Embrace Failure: From Setbacks to Success
Failure is not a roadblock but a stepping stone on the path to success. Throughout high school, I encountered my fair share of disappointments and setbacks, but each one served as a catalyst for growth. Despite initial defeats in student government elections, I persevered, eventually securing leadership positions that once seemed out of reach. Never. Ever. Give. Up.
Although I am leaving NSboro in the geographic sense, I will always be a resident at heart. Whether we’re embarking on new adventures or continuing our academic pursuits, may we always remember our roots, and the invaluable lessons we’ve learned along the way.
