The boys’ and girls’ indoor track and field team concluded a historic season at the Nationals meet.
The meet was held at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Boston from March 7 to March 10. Four relay teams and five individual athletes qualified and competed over the four days. Girls’ coach Patrick Galvin reflected on the experience.
“We had 15 athletes competing at the national championship meet,” Galvin said. “Thursday started off really fun. The boys ran the seeded section, [which is] the fastest section, in the 4 x 1 mile. Just watching their intros with the sparks, the fireworks and the music and having their names called while they ran on the track was pretty fun. They ran well and they were 22nd place in the country.”
Junior Jonah Gould competed in the boys’ 4 x 1 mile relay on Thursday and the boys’ 4 x 800 meter (m) relay on Sunday.
“It was not our best performance, but it was still really fun,” Gould said. “We were a little behind in the 4 x 800m [because of] rough handoffs.”
Despite these disappointments, Gould maintains a positive outlook for the future.
“Overall it was a very fun experience and I can’t wait to go back during outdoor track,” Gould said.
Freshman Tanvi Mehta was the only underclassman to attend the event. She came 23rd in the Freshman 800m and was a member of the girls’ 4 x 1 mile relay team, along with seniors Olivia Guckian and Brigid and Sheila Purcell, that came 27th.
“It went pretty well,” Mehta said. “I got PR’s in both my races and I think overall it was a really fun experience to get to race at that level.”
The momentum generated by the meet will fuel the team’s continued success.
“[I’m] super excited for outdoor [track],” Galvin said. “One week to go!”
