The wrestling team capped off a successful season on February 11, defeating Tyngsboro 51-29 and finishing with a final record of 12-5. With the victory the team captured the Mid-Wach league title, finishing with a 6-0 league record, seeing a vast improvement from last year’s team.
“When I came here we were just under .500 [half wins, half losses] as a team,” junior Austin Roche said. “Last year we were one win over and now we’re much beyond .500 and looking at winning a league title.”
Though the sport focuses mainly on individual achievements, those achievements also contribute to team success.
“You’re wrestling for your team, trying to win matches for team points,” sophomore Drew Cozzolino said. “The team with the most points wins.”
Also contributing to the team’s success was their chemistry, and the bond they formed during practices.
“I’ve never been as close with any team before. The practices are so physically and mentally tiring that an incredible bond is formed as we all push through together,” senior Nate Morrell said.
The team faced a number of challenges, with its toughest point coming after a loss in January to Malden Catholic, 48-36.
“Coming off the [Malden Catholic] loss was tough for us as a team, but we pushed through and won some big matches later in the season,” Roche said.
Moving beyond the adversity, the team experienced one of its many high points in the season with a 35-33 victory over Nashoba.
“We had lost to them the past two years and knew it was going to be close, but everyone stepped up and wrestled well,” Morrell said.
While the regular season has more of a team focus, the playoffs are a whole new game.
“When it comes down to postseason, it’s all individual. You can go as far as you can get yourself,” Morrell said.
The team has high aspirations after a successful season, hoping to win the division two Central Mass sectionals and also hopes to have many individual champions along the way.
