Field hockey makes it to semi-finals after strong season
December 6, 2014
The past season for the varsity field hockey team was filled with much success.
The team was led by science teacher and coach Dan Welty and senior captains Caty Lazo and Clare Strickland. The girls started the season off strong with five wins in a row, and ended the season with a final record of 15-3-3.
“We all felt really strong in that we’re going to do well, and we knew we were going to succeed no matter how many games we won or loss, or how far we made it,” junior Taylor Long said.
The team’s only two losses in the regular season came against Westborough and Shrewsbury. Although there were challenging games throughout the season, the girls pulled through and made it to the playoffs.
“I’m so proud of our team and how far we made it this year. Even though I think we had the ability to win the [Central Massachusetts] semi-finals, it was still such a big accomplishment,” Lazo said.
The team reached the first round of playoffs, defeating St. Peter-Marian 7-0, followed by another win over Westborough 4-1 in the quarterfinals. The girls then suffered a loss during the semi-finals against Nashoba, 2-0. The team put forth 100% effort through every game until the very end.
Their regular season record of 13-2-3 was the second strongest record in Algonquin field hockey history.
“At the beginning of the season we did not think we would be the strongest team, but we came out to be the second strongest team Mr. Welty’s ever had,” sophomore Lauren Speranzella said.
From having outrageous spirit days to getting their hair done together, this team finished off the season strong, on and off the field. As the seniors say goodbye and head off to new places, they leave with the satisfaction of a great season while the rest of the team waits until next year to come back stronger than ever.
