Golf team thrives

Team sets records, gains attention

The golf team is finally making a name for themselves, breaking records and winning game after game with a current 10-0 record putting them at the top of the Midland League A standings.

Because football and soccer are at the forefront of most fall sports fans’ minds, the golf team usually receives little to no acknowledgement, but the team is finally getting the attention they deserve.

The team is looking stronger than ever.

“Earlier in the year we shot a combined 175, which is even par, and then just two matches ago we shot a 174. Both are the best that the team has ever shot,” senior Matt O’Donnell said.

“We’re really good this year. Last year we came in sixth in our state tournament, and we didn’t lose a single person in our playing squad,” O’Donnell said.

Junior Connor Henderson described the dedication that it takes to prosper on the team.

“A lot of hard work goes into the sport because during the summer when we’re not actually in season we’re still playing and getting better every day,” Henderson said.

This year’s team has 16 players but only the top eight, consisting of three seniors and five juniors, travel and play in games. The team is currently undefeated, and they don’t intend to lose anytime soon.

According to O’Donnell and Henderson, golf team chemistry is slightly different than most sports.

“As a team we’re not only competing against other teams, but there are internal rivalries too, to get the best scoring average,” O’Donnell said.

The team’s goals are to stay undefeated and qualify for states. Henderson and O’Donnell described how this is the first year anyone has asked them how the team is doing.

Henderson believes “The attention to golf has gone up due to social media and articles in the paper”.

Ecstatic that the team is finally getting more attention, they know not to get too confident as they still have a long road ahead of them. With seven more games to go in regular season, they are hoping to add to their wins. The acknowledgement is a great feeling for them.
