As she looks at the runners ahead of her, senior Allison Subat finds a comfortable pace at a cross country meet last season.

These interviews were done remotely due to COVID-19 precautions.

Because of the cancellation of the 2020 spring sports season, senior athletes reflected on the best moments from their time playing their sport at Algonquin.

Julia Kardos:

What are you most proud of from your time doing outdoor track at Algonquin?

“I would say my proudest moment in outdoor track was getting my mile PR last spring (5:27). I had been working my time down all season and finally breaking 5:30 at the State Quals meet made me feel super accomplished. I was rewarded with the biggest headache of my life, but I felt amazing after!”

What will you miss most from doing outdoor track at Algonquin?

“What I will miss most about track at Algonquin is definitely the team. Girls team, boys team, coaches, everyone. When you do a sport, practice takes up most of your social life, and I’ve never had so many friends in one place. They made training fun and were always there to motivate me.”

What is your favorite memory of outdoor track at Algonquin?

“My favorite memory? I thought about this one a lot, but I’d have to settle on one of my races back in freshman year. I had just hit a big PR and said “What the actual heck?!” after I crossed the finish line. The team thought it was hilarious, so I got a superlative at the banquet for the best catchphrase.”

What will you miss most from doing outdoor track at Algonquin?

“I will miss my teammates the most and the comradery aspect of the team. Track is unique because you gain a lot of respect for people who compete in a variety of events and it’s a supportive environment.”

What is your favorite memory of outdoor track at Algonquin?

“I think my favorite memory from track at Algonquin was when the distance runners ran a mile time trial at the end of the season and everyone ran either a season beat or close to!”

Liz Devarney:

What are you most proud of from your time doing outdoor track at Algonquin?

“I am most proud of the accomplishments that I have made over the years. I am a 4-year varsity track and field member and have been to the district relays and district qualifiers the last three years. Last year I also made it to the state qualifying meet.”

What will you miss most from doing outdoor track at Algonquin?

“I miss the people and the activities the most. All the throwers on track and field are like a family, and it is strange that we are not able to be together. It was always an adventure over at the throwing circles, lots of jokes and fooling around. But we also were always there to help each other out, and teach each other how to do something new or improve.”

What is your favorite memory of outdoor track at Algonquin?

“Last year I was able to compete in the weighmans pentathalon (5-event meet – shotput, discus, javelin, 100m, 200m). Coach B took 7 throwers to the meet and we spent almost all day participating in each event. When I say all day I mean ALL DAY. We got there before lunch and left after midnight. I remember running my final 200m race in the dark, which was honestly a ton of fun. When we got home I believe it was around 12:30, and little did we know that the backpacks that we left in the school were locked in.”
