Boys’ hockey was unable to come back after the Marlborough Panthers explosive start, losing 4-1 on Saturday, Jan. 25.

Marlborough scored their first goal towards the end of a defensive first period. Their strong second period, in which they scored two goals in the first five minutes, virtually put the game out of reach for Algonquin.

“We didn’t rise to [the occasion] tonight, certainly not in the beginning,” head coach Greg Capello said. “It really took us to get down three to nothing before we really picked up the pace, and it’s too late. We’re not a team that scores a lot of goals so it’s hard for us to come back from a 3-0 deficit.”

Though Marlborough won by three goals, Algonquin had 10 more shots on goal than Marlborough.

“It felt worse than it was,” Capello said. “In the end, we out shot them a lot more than we did in the last two games we played them which were much closer.”

The only goal that Algonquin scored was from a face-off. Senior captain Ben Macaulay passed it to junior Johnny Jordan who then scored it. It was Jordan’s first goal as a player on the varsity team.

To make the playoffs, Algonquin must win five of the next seven games. According to Macaulay and senior captain Nicholas Larsen, they have to raise their energy and stay positive moving forward.

“It’s not time to hit the panic button but we got bear down a little bit,” Larsen said. “In the next seven games, we gotta get 10 points so we gotta take each practice, each game really seriously.”
