If you’re looking for a movie with iconic fashion, teen stereotypes and cheesy lines then go pick up Clueless!
Director Amy Heckerling does a fabulous job of bringing teen life in the 90s to the big screen complete with adequate fashion sense (think lots of plaid and everything matches), teenage lingo; including phrases like “way harsh” and “as if”, and songs such as “kids of America” that would make anyone want to dance in their room singing into a hairbrush.
To sum it up, Clueless is about a spoiled 16 year old teenage girl named Cher (Alicia Silverstone), who is used to being at the top of, well everything. Her platinum blonde hair, with a middle part no less, thigh high socks and plaid miniskirts have her dominating the social scene.
Like most teen girls today Cher is mostly concerned with boys, shopping and her image. So when the new girl comes along, Amber (Elisa Donovan), and doesn’t dress to Cher’s liking, Cher vows to change her. She makes Amber her personal Barbie doll and transforms her into a Cher clone, only with brown hair and a Boston accent.
This movie isn’t just about stuck up right girls who are shallower than a kiddy pool, at least not until the end. Even at the beginning you have to respect the girl with the killer confidence but it’s not until the last scene that a heartwarming transformation takes place.
Clueless is not only a romantic comedy but also a movie that teaches about what it means to be selfless and just an all around good person. Eventually Cher gives up her top spot in the social food chair and instead uses her popularity to help others.
By the end of the movie Cher is no longer that clueless mean girl that only cares about herself; she realizes that the world doesn’t revolve around her and that she doesn’t have to show off to other people, she can just be herself.
