She-Hawks soar for gender equality
November 20, 2014
The She-Hawks aim to spread awareness about the truth of feminism and promote gender equality in the community.
Seniors Vikki Elliot, Elisabeth Waters, and Alice Donnelly created the club in an effort to combat false ideas about feminism as well as promote an environment that supports gender equality.
“Feminism is about equality,” Donnelly said. “We want to destroy the misconceptions about feminism.”
Waters explained that feminism does not consist of women that hate men, but it involves people from various backgrounds regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation.
“I want people to understand feminism isn’t just made up of men-haters,” Waters said.
This new club is planning initiatives like selling t-shirts and doing fundraisers to spread awareness about the issue of gender inequality. The club plans to donate the potential funds to Abby’s House, a charity that provides homeless women and children with shelter and necessities.
A typical She-Hawks meeting usually involves discussions, which can include brainstorming and planning for initiatives as well as discussing current events that pertain to gender issues. The club has designs of recruiting male members.
“We want to make people realize it isn’t just a club for girls,” Elliot said. “Feminism benefits all genders.”
The club advisor, English teacher Monica Grehoski, was exhilarated to be the coordinator of this new club.
“I was pretty psyched,” Grehoski said. “[Gender equality] is very important to me.”
Grehoski hopes that the club will act as a catalyst for small cultural changes that promote gender equality, while having fun and celebrating gender in general. She also hopes to seek out guest speakers for the cause.
The club meets on Tuesdays at 2pm in H202.
