Do you feel it is beneficial or necessary for Algonquin to have a new athletic complex? Why or why not?

“Yes, I think so because it is so difficult to play field hockey on grass, and the field hockey teams have had to rent out a turf field fifteen minutes from the school. Because of the field’s distance from the school, practice often cannot start on time when it’s supposed to start at 3 p.m. Everyone needs a ride to the field, which would be okay if it was just one small team, but both JV and varsity practice on the same field, so there are not enough upperclassmen drivers to take everyone over to the field.”

What concerns do you have regarding Gonkplex?

“The turf fields would benefit the field hockey team but they would hurt the rugby teams. Almost every other sport is better played on turf, but for rugby, a grassy field is better especially for the number of falls each player takes during a game. Putting in turf at Gonk would mean that any time a player fell during a game, they are risking turf burn, which is far more painful than a bruise.”

What are you most excited about regarding the potential new athletic complex?

“Lack of a turf field at school influences the team’s budget. A significant portion of the money we have is spent on the field every year.  If we had turf fields at the school, we would be able to focus the budget on things that would better benefit our team.”
