Social studies teacher Brian Kellet is starting a new, half year course called Case Studies in Native American History.

Case Studies in Native American History

Case Studies in Native American History is a new Honors-level course available to sophomores, juniors and seniors that is dedicated to studying Native American history from the precolonial era to modern times.

The single-semester course will examine Native American history, culture and identity. Students will also focus on case studies about key interactions between European settlers and Indigenous peoples as a way to identify the impact the United States government has had on Native nations, communities and individuals.

“There is a need to bring the voices and perspectives of different Native communities and individuals to light,” History teacher Brian Kellett, who is teaching the course, said.

Case Studies in Native American History teaches about Native American culture and identity while examining the impact European colonization had on them. The hope is to amplify and learn about the Indigenous perspective and experience.

“People should come to the course realizing there’s a lot out there that they have not been told or talked about in their traditional course of studies,” Kellett said. “There may have also been some misconceptions they could have been told along the way.
