Boys’ varsity golf is swinging into districts after a regular season record of 14-1-1. The boys were quite satisfied with their current record and are confident in their abilities in postseason.

“We lost a lot of seniors last year but I mean, we’re still pretty good for Central Mass so we should make a good run at districts,” junior captain Jack Tobin said. “We have our rough patches here and there but it’s a pretty decent team.”

Although they finished strong, the beginning of the season was not exactly what the team hoped for.

“We were 4-1-1, which isn’t bad but we thought we could have gone 6-0,” Tobin said. “We tied with Nashoba, which was kind of disappointing, and so was our loss to Westborough.”

From there, the boys worked hard on improving themselves and their game and it certainly showed.

“We can always figure out what we are doing wrong and take a step back to analyze our problems,” junior Matt Umphrey said. “From there, we can bounce back together through the great chemistry [the team] has.”

As the season progressed, the team’s hard work started to pay off. Besides Westborough, they did not lose another game.

“We needed to start getting more consistent,” Tobin said. “We also won 4 matches in a row and our confidence started to build up more and more.”

A confidence booster for the team was their win against Shrewsbury.

“They are one of our biggest competitors and to win at their course was pretty good since we already beat them at our course,” Tobin said. “We played them twice and beat them twice.”

Throughout the pasta parties and long bus rides, the boys were able to form strong connections that truly made the team what it is today.

“The chemistry is great between all of us on the team,” Umphrey said. “We were all able to create a bond through competing together and supporting each other.”
