Waste is left on cafeteria table after third lunch: a styrofoam tray topped with plastic bags, food, and cartons of beverages. According to Sustainability.wustl.edu in “The Environmental Impacts of Styrofoam,” the petroleum based styrofoam is the main pollutant of oceans and other water sources, and contributes to large amounts of greenhouse gases.

Senior Carleigh Rosenberg enjoys her weekly iced coffee from Dunkin Donuts. “I go [to buy an iced coffee at Dunkin Donuts] 4 times a week,” senior Patrick Robbins said, not having a reusable cup each time.

Recyclable material, such as plastic coffee cups, sits at the bottom of the trash.

Waste of students and teachers begin to pile in the gym garbage bin: a pingpong paddle, plastic bottles, Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks coffee cups.

Senior Ethan Ash takes a swig of his daily plastic water bottle. He prefers plastic water bottles over reusable as it is more convenient to him to have pre chilled water from his fridge. According to Banthebottle.com, the annual recycling rate of plastic is 23% leaving 38 million, of the 50 million water bottles used, wasted each year.

Senior Sydney Carney sits down at the cafeteria surrounded by the result of her daily gathering of napkins to accompany her lunch. According to munchies.com in “Paper Napkins Are Dying a Slow Death Thanks to Millennials,” paper napkins, including those made of recycled material, are a burden on the environment, causing 70% more carbon emissions than alternatives.
